Demographically, social media users tend to be younger than the overall population, more are female and they have a slightly higher income.

When looking specifically at the user of each platform, Facebook users average 37 years old and MySpace users are the youngest, at an average age of 33 of those profiled. LinkedIn users, meanwhile, have the highest incomes.

Earlier this month, comScore published research which showed that more people in the UK from the 15-24 year old age group are visiting social networking sites than they were a year ago.

comScore said that while the average 15-24 year old is spending less time overall on social networking sites, it appears to be due to youngsters spending less time around secondary sites.

Social network users are not just accessing sites from their PCs. A study from CSS Insight found that a third of young adults in the UK regularly access Facebook and Twitter from their mobiles.
