US viewers are more connected than Europeans

Connected TV owners in the US are over three times more likely to be regular users of internet services on their TVs than those in Europe, according to new research from Strategy Analytics.

The survey showed that more than a third of US smart TV owners now use their TV set to connect to the internet at least once a week, compared to only 9% of European smart TV owners.

A third of Europeans have never connected their smart TV to the internet, according to the research.

However, only one-third of smart TV owners across both the US and Europe bought their TV because of its internet capabilities. One of the key drivers for the disparity in European and US connected TV usage is the mass availability of over the top (OTT) online video services such as Netflix, Strategy Analytics said.
