Virgin Takes Online Ad Sales In House To Maximise Revenue

Virgin Logo Virgin Radio is to bring advertising sales for its online properties in house, with new head of online sales Rowan Link spearheading the initiative.

Link will work closely with sales director Nick Hewat and director of digital media James Cridland to maximise the station’s online advertising revenues.

Bringing 15 years of experience in radio to the new role, Link also has a wealth of ability in online sales, most recently working for six years at Yahoo! where she held responsibility for the internet giant’s advertising sales and operations.

“Radio stations have consistently ignored the revenue streams which their sites can generate,” Link explained. “Virgin Radio has a long history of pioneering internet listening and we can now maximise the revenue potential of that audience.”

Nick Hewat added that Virgin would now seek to “fully monetise” its “award winning success” in online content.

Last year’s Annual Webby Awards saw Virgin scoop gongs for its main website, as well as the individual sites for spin off stations Virgin Radio Classic Rock, Virgin Radio Groove and Virgin Radio Xtreme.

The broadcaster has invested heavily in online development in recent months, with podcasts, internet radio and innovative campaigns featuring radio streaming featuring prominently in its strategy (see Virgin To Promote Breakfast Through Portal Streaming).
