VoIP To Reach 20 Million Households By 2010

By 2010, voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP) is forecast to reach nearly 20 million households worldwide, according to Global Information Incorporated.

The report The Voice Of the Lightwave: VoIP says, that currently VoIP is not selling much but by 2010 should reach about 25% of the high-speed internet access market, generating nearly $1 billion.

However, to reach its potential and make a big impact on the telecoms industry, network VoIP must take on a significant share of the residential market and grow rapidly from the 500,000 network VoIP lines available at present.

Global Information said, ‘forecasting VoIP is extremely difficult because it is really still in its infancy and because there are a number of ‘side issues’ that could have major positive or negative impacts’.

One of the issue currently facing the market is drumming up new business for both enterprise and log distance sales. At present, new sales are not incremental to the existing market, meaning that existing consumers are purchasing new or replacement software instead of new customers generating the sales, which in turn would lead to a growth in the industry.

A separate report from eMarketer said, VoIP equipment is expected to grow by 48% to $4.9 billion by the end of this year (see VoIP Market To Grow By 48% In 2004).
