Worldwide IPTV Set-Top Box Sales To Rise

Sales of IPTV set-top boxes worldwide will rise by more than 110% to 7.9 million units this year, according to a new report from Strategy Analytics.

The report predicts that more than three million HD-enabled IPTV set-top boxes will be sold in Europe alone this year as operators make the switch to H.264 technology.

The share of DVRs is also growing rapidly, rising to 29% of the global market this year from 15% in 2006 as IPTV newcomers seek to compete with satellite and cable incumbents.

Strategy Analytics predicts that annual worldwide sales of IPTV set-top boxes will reach 33.5 million by 2012, by which time the global installed base will be 112 million units.

Asia-Pacific will be the dominant market, accounting for 45% of the installed base, followed by Europe (33%) and the US (13%).

A recent report from Parks Associates suggests that the number of IPTV subscribers will reach nearly 60 million worldwide by year-end 2011, spurred by both aggressive and reactionary telco tactics. (see 60 Million IPTV Subscribers Worldwide By 2011), whilst Screen Digest has suggested that the European market for IPTV will double in 2007 (see European IPTV Market To Double).
