National Newspaper ABCs – November 2014

Less than a handful of national newspaper titles recorded an increase in circulation during the month of November, according to the latest ABC results – although the declines were mostly marginal.

Dailies

The biggest losses in the daily market belonged to the Daily Star and the Sun, down -2.7% period on period (PoP) and -2.4% PoP, respectively; however, the Sun reported a healthy 10.5% increase on the previous year, adding an extra 183,000 copies to its print run.

In the quality market, the Financial Times dropped 4,300 copies after a -2% PoP decline, while a -0.9% PoP decrease lost the Daily Telegraph 4,300. The Guardian, Independent, ‘i’, and The Times were all also down on the previous month.

Elsewhere, while the Daily Mail broke even with no change at all, a -2% PoP slide dropped 18,600 copies from the Daily Mirror‘s print run, and a -1% PoP decrease lost the Daily Express a little under 5,000.

The Daily Record was down -0.5% PoP to lose just over 1,000.

Overall the daily market was down -1.4% (-100,000) over the period and -3.4% (-255,500) over the year.

London Free Press

There was little period change in the free market, with City A.M. one of the very few titles overall to record a PoP increase in circulation. Up 0.5% PoP, the title bagged itself an extra 600 copies, while Metro (London) lost 1,800 and the London Evening Standard a little over 8,600.

Overall the free press market was down -0.6% (9,800) over the period and, thanks to the extended print run of the Evening Standard, up 10.7% year on year.

Sunday market

While the Sunday market saw two titles record an increase in circulation over the period, it still faired slightly worse than other markets overall.

A 1.1% PoP boost saw the Sunday Mail add an extra 2,400 copies, while a 0.6% PoP increase added 1,200 to the Observer‘s.

Not such good news for the Sunday Post in the mid market, which dropped 23,200 copies after a -10.8% PoP hit – the largest decline across all of November’s titles.

The Sunday Mirror also suffered during the month, with a -4.2% PoP decline seeing the paper lose just under 38,800, while a -2.5% decrease took 40,000 from the Sun on Sunday. Still, the Sun‘s Sunday edition remains the best-performing Sunday title with an average circulation of almost 1.6 million.

Overall the market was down -2% (141,300) over the period and -10.3% (791,500) over the year.
