January newspaper ABCs: A good month for Mail on Sunday

In a reasonably static month for printed news, the overall dailies market recorded no change between December and January, although the market was down -7.8% year-on-year.

The best performing titles included the Guardian, up 0.7%, the Daily Express (+0.2%), the Daily Mail (+1.9%) and the Sun (+1%) – the latter of which remains the best-selling UK daily with 1.41m copies.

The worst performing title for the period was freebie Metro, down -1.8%. to 1.43m.

The Sunday market performed well in January and was up 0.6% overall. Six titles recorded sales growth from December, led by the Mail on Sunday with +2.2% – an additional 22,200 copies to reach more than a million sales.

The worst hit titles were the Observer (-1.7% to 164,000), The Daily Star Sunday (-1.7% to 202,000), and the Sunday People (-2.3% to 160,000).
