Shazam Launches New Songmail Service

Shazam, the mobile music recognition company, has announced plans to launch a new Songmail service to give consumers the chance to send and share music.

The new service, which launches this spring, will allow mobile phone owners to send and share music over their phones via a 30-second audio clip. Shazam is hoping the new service will drive music enthusiasts towards premium services.

Songmail will allow users to forward any piece of pre-recorded music they have identified or ‘tagged’ by dialling 2584. They will then be able to record a personalised greeting, and send a 30 second clip of music to a friend or loved one. The recipient will then get a text message with simple instructions detailing how they retrieve the clip and their greeting.

Vijay Solanki, marketing director of Shazam, commented: “Songmail is a great new way to use the immediacy and popularity of SMS to allow people to share their feelings instantly. Since launch, many of our consumers are tagging new releases and old classics that they hear.”

Shazam has secured a deal with Warner and all 400 of AIM’s record labels, granting the necessary copyright licences for their entire catalogues. The company is also negotiating deals with other record labels in the UK.

Songmail builds upon Shazam’s real-time song identification service that works anywhere. When users hear a song they like they simply dial Shazam’s four-digit number from their mobile, point their mobile towards the music, Shazam cuts the call after 30 seconds, and immediately they learn the name of the song and the artist via text message.
