Facebook threatened to remove news from its platform in the US if the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act is passed, a bill that will allow publishers to collectively negotiate commercial agreements with social media companies about how their content may be distributed.
Meta published a statement saying it would be “forced to consider removing news from our platform altogether rather than submit to government-mandated negotiations that unfairly disregard any value we provide to news outlets through increased traffic and subscriptions.”
