Guardian Sees Broadsheet End In Decline

Guardian Cover The latest ABC national newspaper results released this morning show the Guardian ending its last full month as a broadsheet title with the largest year on year decline in any market.

The title, which switches to a new, mid-sized Berliner format on Monday, lost 9.7% from its circulation year on year in August, pushing its total to 341,698. In period on period analysis the decline is less severe, however, although a 4.6% dip still translates to a loss of 16,647 copies in real terms.

The Guardian‘s performance is not out of place in the quality sector, however, with the Financial Times and Independent both suffering declines of 4.0% and 1.9% year on year.

The Times was the only national quality title to see its circulation increase in August, adding 4% year on year. However, in period on period comparisons, the title is shown to have shed 2.6% on the previous month, with circulation now resting at 680,214.

Full analysis of the latest national newspaper circulation figures will be available on MediaTel NewsLine this afternoon, with breakdowns of all sectors for both the daily and Sunday markets.
