Telegraph Reshuffles Editorial Ahead Of Revamp

Daily Telegraph Cover The Daily Telegraph is set for an editorial overhaul in the coming months, as Martin Newland, editor of the paper, signs Neil Darbyshire and William Lewis as joint deputy editors.

The appointments offer “the qualities most suited to driving forward change and development at the title,” according to Newland, who also stated that any change would maintain the paper’s “reputation for quality, integrity and comprehensive coverage.”

Amongst the planned changes are higher pagination and more daily sections, expected to debut this autumn.

Explaining the deputy editor appointments, Newland said: “In Neil, we have a consummate news man and guardian of indispensable Telegraph editorial values. In Will, we have a true innovator with an eye for detail and structural change, attributes that will help me continue to drive development at the title.”

In addition to his role as deputy editor, Lewis will maintain responsibility for business coverage at the newspaper.

The Telegraph also announced several other editorial appointments today, with Susan Ryan taking overall responsibility for features content in the newspaper. As managing editor, she will also act as liaison between editorial and the newspaper’s commercial and marketing departments, as well as holding responsibility for special editorial projects.

Michele Lavery, currently editor of Telegraph Magazine will become assistant editor, Saturday under the reshuffle, working with the editor to develop the Saturday package, in particular the newspaper’s acclaimed sections.

Also receiving new responsibilities is Corinna Honan, who will assist Lavery with the Saturday newspaper and have specific responsibility for Saturday Review, book buying and excerpts and editorial troubleshooting for the editor. As assistant editor, her new role will make her more involved with the day to day running of the Monday to Friday newspaper.

Richard Preston, currently news editor, will become home editor. As head of home news, Preston will be responsible for driving the news agenda. He will liaise with specialists and reporters and, above all, night editor David Lucas to provide better polished, more visually inviting news pages.

Lastly, Michael Smith will be promoted to news editor. Smith joined the Telegraph a year ago from the Evening Standard, where he was executive news editor. Before that, he was deputy editor at Metro, which he joined after four years on the news desk at the Daily Mail.
