UK Online Sales Slow In February, But Growth Is Ten Times That Of US

Online retail sales in the UK fell for a second consecutive month, according to data from the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), as reported by NUA Internet Surveys.

Total online retail sales for February reached £397 million – down 4.4% on January, but showing a slowing rate of decline when compared to the 17% drop recorded between December 2001 and January this year.

Online sales for February 2002 rose 85.4% year on year. However, this is substantially down on the average 133% growth seen in the H2 2001, according to the report.

UK online sales growth outstrips US tenfold IMRG says that online retail sales in the UK are growing ten times faster than in the US. Year on year growth in Q4 2001 was 136% in the UK, compared to 13% in the US.

Online sales as a proportion of total retail sales represent almost 3% in the UK, compared to just 1.2% in the US.
