Worldwide growth of digital set-top boxes for cable, DTH and DTT platforms will approach 30 million new units in 2005. This is according to a new report from the Multimedia Research Group (MRG).

The study, entitled Home Gateway Report: Worldwide Multi-Carrier Digital Settop & Services Analysis & Forecast examines the impact of emerging technologies and reflects on how cable, satellite and digital advances have paved the way for new products and services. These include High Definition (HD), Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) and Video-On-Demand (VOD).

The MRG estimates that upwards of 29.5 million set-top boxes will be shipped worldwide in 2005, driving the digital video subscriber base to over 126 million and annual STB sales revenue to $7.34 billion.

“There are ample short and long term opportunities and rewards for cable, DTH and DTT for those with the foresight to exploit them,” said Gary Schulz, CEO of the Multimedia Research Group.
