German Surfers Ride The Broadband Wave

Germany has consolidated its position as Europe’s leading internet market (see Germany Is Top European Internet Market) and around a quarter of the country’s users now access the web via cable or DSL broadband.

The number of DSL users in Germany had increased to 6.53 million by the end of the first quarter, according to a survey from Atfacts, a joint venture of Lycos Europe, IP Newmedia and SevenOne Interactive.

Internet usage remains more popular among the male fraternity with 59% of German men claiming to have gone online in the past 12 months compared to just 43% of women.

Germany was quick to join the broadband revolution (see UK Lags Behind Europe In Broadband Uptake) and the rise in the number of high-speed connections has resulted in an increase in the amount of time spent on the web. German internet users now spend an average of 60 minutes a day online compared to 56 minutes in 2002 and the average time spent online by daily web users has soared from 69 minutes to 87 minutes over the same period.
