High-definition television (HDTV) is beginning to cast off its reputation as a niche technology and almost one-in-six US adults say that they plan to get a compliant set.
Over three-quarters of US consumers are aware of HDTV but a significant 40% say they have heard of it but do not know anything about the programming. Nonetheless, the number of people who have never heard of HDTV has fallen from 26% in 2002 to 23% today.
eMarketer has predicted that the number of HDTV homes in the US will rise from 2.2 million this year to 16.4 million in 2006 (see INSIGHTanalysis: Digital TV To Reach 50% Of US Homes By 2005).
