Traditional Habits Still Dominating Over Online Alternatives

Although the internet increasingly plays a vital role in our daily routine, it still plays second fiddle to old-fashioned habits, says a new report.

According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 88% of Americans online admitted the internet plays an important part in their day-to-day schedules, with two-third saying it played a major role and without it life would be disrupted. Despite this however, many still admitted that they prefer to do things in the traditional way.

The survey revealed that people prefer to go shopping to try on clothes, choose birthday cards from a shop and mail them in a post-box, watch the news on television and listen to music via the radio. However, keeping in touch with family and friends was found to be the fastest growing online daily activity.

Report author, Deborah Fallows said: “In just a few years, the internet has made a strong mark on everyday life. Yet, it is mostly the case that internet users lean heavily towards the offline alternative for accomplishing the key tasks of their lives.”

For 17 of the 18 activities surveyed, real world was choosen more often than the virtual alternative but the single actvity where online outweighs the offline alternative is looking for maps or driving directions, with 87% always opting for the internet.
