US Digital TVs To Top 27 Million By 2008

Sales of digital televisions (DVTs) in the US look set to reach the 27.05 million mark by 2008, increasing by 20.08 million, from 6.97 million units in 2003, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

The total number of DVT units sold so far this year is 6.3 million, with almost 844,000 units sold in November, indicating a boom in popularity in the run up to the festive season.

Sean Wargo, CEA director of market research said: “With holiday sales still going strong, we expect 2004 will finish on a high note for DTV. Sales have gone through the roof this year and the trend will only continue in the coming year, particularly as consumers become acquainted with products like Digital Cable Ready that make the transition to HDTV seamless.”

US online forecast specialist, eMarketer, has predicted that the number of digital TV households in the US will total 70.3 million by 2007, up from 44.2 million in 2003. The company has also estimated that penetration of high definition TV (HDTV) will reach 21.3 million, an increase of 20.2 million from 1.1 million in 2003.

The US prediction is in line with the forecast made by Informa Media Group in September, that in the next ten years, Canada, Finland, Ireland, Norway and the US will have full digital penetration, with the UK, Denmark, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Sweden and Taiwan switching over in 2015, followed by the rest of the world from 2016 and onwards (see Full Digital TV Penetration Expected To Begin In 2014).
