Multiroom DVRs To Exceed 25 Million By 2009

The number of multiroom digital video recorders (DVR) units deployed by cable and satellite television providers in the US are set to exceed 25 million by 2009, according to a new report by market research and consulting firm, Parks Associates.

The study forecasts that companies will bring into action mass-entertainment networking solutions in limited numbers during 2005, but increase penetration to encompass approximately 16 million US households by the end of 2009.

Commenting on the predictions, Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst at Parks Associates said: “Just as TiVo Inc and its ilk introduced ‘time-shifting’ to the consumption of television content, multiroom DVR solutions will offer ‘place-shifting’ capabilities. Recorded programming will be available throughout the home as these devices bring new levels of convenience and flexibility to TV use.”

Global DVR penetration has been forecast to enjoy a massive growth over the next five years, with Informa Media Group, estimating that digital video recorders will reach 11% of television households worldwide (see DVRs Set To Become Essential Household Items). The firm predicts that by 2010 nearly 120 million homes will have DVRs, accounting for 11% of global TV households and 33% of digital TV homes.

In addition to the predictions made by Parks Associates, they estimate that home networking chipset developers will gain significantly from the aggressive deployment of multiroom DVR solutions.

Scherf said: “The home networking industry hopes to expand the notion of connectivity beyond broadband connections and PC-centric content. This year holds many opportunities for players developing technologies using wireless, powerline, phoneline, and coaxial networking solutions as they are applied to multiroom DVR solutions.”
