March Text Messages Continues To Break Records

March 2005 has seen a new record set for text messaging, with an impressive 2.57 billion sent, a 21% increase on the number sent in March 2004 and a massive 93% rise on 2002’s figure.

The new figures released today by the Mobile Data Association (MDA) show, on average, 83 million person-to-person texts were sent per day, the highest daily figure recorded to date.

The MDA also reveal that with the forthcoming election SMS messaging has become an essential tool in the communications mix for campaigners and voters. Question answering SMS service, 82ASK, has seen a 61% rise in questions about policies, political views and ‘how to vote’.

January also broke records, with an average daily total of 82 million messages sent, an increase of 15.7% on the same period in 2004 (see January 2005 Breaks Text Message Record).
