Plasma TV Shipments Reach Record High

Plasma television shipments reached a record high of 1.13 million units during the second quarter of 2005, up by 24% compared to the same period last year, according to DisplaySearch’s Quartlery Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report.

The study shows that Plasma TVs gained share in all regions, overtaking rival large format technology rear projection, (RPTV), for the first time in China.

Plasma televisions overtook RPTVs worldwide with a 2.9% unit share, up from 2% in Q1. The RPTV market fell from 2.9% in the first quarter to 2.5% in the second quarter on a 27% quarter on quarter decline and a dip of 17% year on year decline.

Plasma TVs now lead RPTVs in all regions expect North America where the penetration of 50 inch and larger televisions remains higher than the rest of the world, favouring lower priced RPTVs.

Meanwhile, high definition television (HDTV) is predicted to hit 15.5 million households worldwide by the end of 2005, with penetration forecast to reach 52 million by 2009, according to market research firm, In-Stat (see Global HDTV Penetration To Reach 52 Million By 2009).

Previous predictions for HDTV penetration in the US, from Strategy Analytics, estimated that there would be 37 million HD enabled sets in US homes by the end of 2008. The firm also expects that half of this figure will be receiving high-definition programming from cable, satellite and terrestrial providers (see HDTV To Reach 37 Million US Homes By 2008).
