Worldwide PVR Shipments Hit 19 Million

Worldwide unit shipments of personal video recorder (PVR) products reached 19 million in 2005, an increase of 60% on the 11.9 million units shipped in 2004, says new research by In-Stat (see PVR Subscribers To Reach 34 Million By 2010).

The study predicts that this figure will reach 42 million by 2010, showing that PVRs have gone from “niche” to mainstream since their introduction seven years ago (see PVR Adoption To Slow After 2010).

In-Stat also claim that the PVR penetration rate of total US TV households is 11%, meaning 12.3 million US households are installed with PVR products, with TiVo (see TiVo Reveals Adverts That Can’t Be Skipped Through), EchoStar, and Time Warner Cable the top three PVR service providers in terms of end users.

Reasons for the continuing growth in PVR take-up are not hard to work out, with an In-Stat consumer survey finding that 86% of PVR users are either extremely satisfied or very satisfied with the PVR service.

In-Stat’s research also showed that in 2005 North America and Japan accounted for 82% of all worldwide PVR product unit shipments and worldwide PVR product revenues reached $6.6 billion in 2005, up from $4.5 billion in 2004.

Other research carried out by In-Stat forecast that DVD player and recorder units will sell a combined 176.6 million units worldwide in 2010, up from 140.8 million units in 2005, and that Europe will be the strongest region for DVD players and recorders in 2006, with 38.4 million units sold.
