VOD To Reach Over 65 Million US Households By 2010

Video-on-demand (VOD) is expected to reach 65.6 million US households by 2010, compared with 26.5 million VOD households at the end of Q2 2006, according to a new report from Magna Global.

Set top box DVR subscribers are set to reach 35.5 million (30.7% of TV households) by 2010, up from 15 million (13.7% of TV households) at the end of Q2 2006 and 18.1 million (16.4% of TV households) at the end of 2006.

Elsewhere, iSuppli have forecast that the overall global VOD market will grow from below $2 billion in 2006 to nearly $13 billion in 2010.(see VOD Market To See Massive Growth).

Magna Global estimates that as of the end of June, 58.4 million households had broadband access out of 115 million total households (equivalent to 50.6% household penetration).

Including broadband and dial-up access, it is estimated that 68.7 million (or 59.6% of total households) now have some form of internet access at home, up slightly over the past quarter, as most growth in broadband access appears to come from households which were already online.

With regard to streaming video content, the report says that streaming research firm Accustream forecasts 23 billion online streams for 2006, with an average duration of 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

Magna Global says that this number can be compared with the total conventional broadcast and cable TV consumption, which averages 33 hours per week per person.

Accustream also estimates that there will be close to 60 billion online video streams by 2010, with Magna saying that, assuming continued growth in television and population, they predict approximately 12 trillion equivalent viewing units at the end of the decade.
