First UK Picture Message Figures Show 88 Million Sent In Q3

During the third quarter of 2006, 88 million picture messages (MMS) were sent throughout the UK, equating to an average of almost one million per day throughout July, August and September, according to the Mobile Data Association.

October’s total was the highest yet, with 30 million picture messages sent across the networks. Earlier this year, the MDA revealed that over half of the UK’s phones are picture-capable, and as the number of people using camera phones grows, more and more users are realising the full potential of their handsets by sending and receiving the photographs they take.

Meanwhile, November’s figure of 3.8 billion text messages sent in the UK takes the annual total so far to 37 billion. Person-to-person texts sent across the UK GSM network operators last month show an incredible increase of one billion on the total sent during the same period in 2005. November’s total represents an average of 126 million text messages currently sent per day in the UK.

On 4 January 2006 the MDA will announce the total number of text messages sent on New Year’s Day – 2006’s figure was 165 million and is the highest ever daily total yet recorded.
