UK Broadband Connections Increase

Eight out of ten internet connections are now via broadband, according to a new report from the Office Of National Statistics.

The survey of internet service providers shows that in December 2006, broadband connections accounted for 79.2% of all internet connections.

The Office of National Statistics says that the year-on-year increase in broadband connections was 29.7%, with a quarterly increase of 5.9%.

Dial-up connections continued to decline and accounted for 20.8% of all internet connections in December 2006.

A recent report from ABI Research forecast that broadband will reach almost half a billion subscribers globally by 2011 (see Global Broadband Subscribers To Increase).

Meanwhile, Parks Associates released a study which said that US residential subscriptions to broadband internet services grew 20% in 2006 to exceed 50 million households (see US Residential Broadband Penetration Grows).
