ABC national newspapers – June 2015
Daily titles
The majority of daily newspapers recorded circulation declines in June, whilst only the Financial Times managed any notable increase in sales.
Up +1.8%, the FT shifted an extra 3,800 copies as the summer began in earnest, whilst the Daily Telegraph recorded a +0.7% increase, The Sun +0.5% and the Daily Express +0.1%.
Every other title was down, with the Guardian hit hardest, recording a -4.2% dip in circulation, period on period, amounting to a drop of more than 7,500.
Similarly, The Independent was down -4.1% (2,500 copies), whilst all other circulation declines were less severe.
Overall, the daily market was down only -0.8%, period on period, but was down -7.4% year on year – a decrease of more than 550,000 newspapers.
London Free Press
The London free press was down -1.5% in June, with the London Evening Standard down -2.9%, Metro at a standstill and City A.M up just 0.1%
The entire market was down -26,600 copies – almost entirely a result of the Standard’s dip – as commuters seemingly swapped news reading for summer pub crawls.
However, year on year, the market was down only -0.6%.
Sunday titles
Like the daily market, there was little to celebrate for the Sunday titles with all but two titles – the Sunday Post and the Daily Star Sunday – recording declines.
The Sunday Post was up a healthy 6.8%, equating to more than 12,200 extra copies in June, whilst the Daily Star Sunday was up 1.6% (a little over 4,000 copies).
Hardest hit was the Observer, down a significant -6.7%, losing more than 13,500 copies, period on period.
The Mail on Sunday was down -4.3%, a drop of almost 64,000 copies, whilst the Independent on Sunday was down -3.9% (-4,000 copies) and the Sunday Times down -3.6% (-29,000).
Overall, the entire Sunday market was down -2%, dropping almost 133,000 copies, period on period.
No title recorded a year on year increase, with the market down -9.2%.
