American online video viewing rises

US internet users viewed 12.7 billion online videos during November, representing a year on year increase of 34%, according to a new report from comScore.

Google sites again ranked as the top US video property, with nearly 5.1 billion videos viewed (representing a 40% share of all videos viewed) in November, with YouTube.com accounting for more than 98% of all videos viewed at the property.

Fox Interactive Media ranked second with 439 million videos (3.5%), followed by Viacom Digital with 325 million (2.6%) and Yahoo! sites with 304 million (2.4%).

More than 146 million US internet users watched an average of 87 videos per viewer in November. Google sites attracted 98 million online video viewers, or approximately two out of every three internet users who watched video during the month. Fox Interactive ranked second with 58.1 million viewers, followed by Yahoo! Sites (40 million) and Microsoft Sites (35 million).

More than one in 10 (11%) young adults age 18-34 in the US now watches TV online at least once a week, and these internet-TV watchers also spend an extra hour each day with media compared with their same-age counterparts, according to recent data from Knowledge Networks (see Watching online TV growing in popularity in US).

Almost a quarter (24%) of respondents to the recent Olswang Convergence Consumer Survey said that they watch TV through the BBC’s online-video service iPlayer for at least one hour a week (see iPlayer becoming more popular).
