Ask Jeeves Creates Shopping Tool With Kelkoo

Internet search operator Ask Jeeves has struck a partnership with shopping search engine Kelkoo to create a product search facility to add to its portfolio of existing search tools.

The new product search service allows easier searching of shopping websites and categories as well as being able to search for products by feature or price. The new deal follows research by into customers’ online and offline shopping behaviours.

Commenting on the new deal, Aylin Savkan, vice-president of marketing for Ask Jeeves, said: “Product-related searches require a different approach than general Web searches. Our intuitive new shopping tool guides users directly to the right product information at the right time.”

The move follows Kelkoo’s purchase by search giant Yahoo! earlier this year. The shopping search business was snapped up by Yahoo for £318 million in March, although the purchase is believed to have won the company around five million extra visitors per month (see Yahoo Set For Massive Boost With Kelkoo Deal).

Competition amongst internet search providers is fierce, with the main players eager not to be left behind in new areas. Rival firm Google is currently operating a trial version of its shopping search engine, Froogle. The system uses the the popular search engine’s familiar ranking system and presents users with a list of both searched and sponsored links.
