63% of the UK population accessed the internet in August, a month when the UK’s online activities hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Among the general civil unrest across the country, news stories highlighted the methods used by rioters to organise themselves and the wider role social media played played.

The UKs online population fell by 816,000 people in July as users continued to turn away from their computers during the summer months.
The total UK online universe declined in June – down 730,000 users month on month to 39.5 million. Although total users had been rising steadily in the last few months, June’s figure shows the first drop in general online take up since February of this year.
40.3 million people made up the UK’s online universe in May, the third time in 2011 were unique users rose past the 40million mark. The data, from online measurement company UKOM, shows no overall rise in users but top brands saw spikes in traffic over the month.

Data recently released by Kantar Media shows that the online population in Great Britain grew by just under 2% in the past year. A monthly average of 37.5 million people were online in GB from January to March 2011.
March brought an increase in overall users for the first time in 2011, according to data released by UKOM. There were signs of recovery from the post-Christmas slump with a boost of 750,000 users to the online population, totalling just under 40 million for the month.
