Broadband ISPs Find Success With Home Networks

Broadband data networks could reach nearly two million US households by the end of 2004 if the current take-up rate continues, says a new report.

According to Parks Associates’ Consumers & Emerging Multimedia Platforms study, the success of home networking, which reached more than one million US households this year, is expected to be as a result of the value added services that broadband will increasingly bring to subscribers, such as voice-over-internet-protocol and content streaming.

The report says there has also been a 60% increase from the end of 2003 in the number of homes subscribing to networking equipment from their broadband provider.

Vice president at Parks Associates, Kurt Scherf said: “Home networking is becoming a powerful value-added application that strengthens the relationship between a broadband ISP and its subscribers. In just over a year, broadband providers have greatly improved the marketing and sales of home networks to their subscribers.

He added: “And this is only the first stage of deployment for broadband service companies. Basic networking configurations will be leveraged for the second-stage deployment of such value-added services as broadband and network performance and security monitoring, voice-over-IP applications and content streaming.”
