BT Launches Text Messaging For Land Line Phones

The popularity of text messaging looks set to get an even further boost as communications giant, British Telecom, has announced that land-line owners can now also join the texting revolution.

New developments in technology has allowed BT to offer text-messaging services to home phone owners. Fixed line texting allows those who don’t have special SMS enabled phones to receive text messages by converting the message in to automated speech and delivering it as a voice message.

BT Wholesale director, Bruce Stanford said: “Texting between mobiles is a phenomenal success story. Now it’s time for those with fixed phones to join in all the excitement.”

Mobile phone users with Vodafone, T Mobile, BT Mobile and 3 will now be able to send text messages to over 20 million fixed lines in the UK and O2 is expected to introduce this service in the next few weeks.

Frost & Sullivan analyst, Nathan Budd said: “Fixed Line Text is the next logical step in the SMS revolution. The UK is well placed to see successful take-up of the service as a result of BT’s strategic approach, which has resulted in the widespread adoption of the service by a critical mass of UK operators.”

In June 2004, the number of individual text messages hit 2.10 billion – setting yet another record breaking month (see Another Record Text Messaging Month In June).
