Direct Marketing Association Appoints New Chairman

The Direct Marketing Association has announced the appointment of Charles Ping, head of CRM at Guardian Newspapers, as its new chairman, replacing David Coupe, managing director of Experian’s marketing services division, who has stepped down following the completion of his two year term as chair.

During his two year chairmanship, Coupe has played a key role in maximising the opportunities created by the restructure of the DMA, boosting membership growth, and capitalising on industry research, best practice and compliance procedures.

Ping, who has been working with Coupe for the past two years as the DMA’s deputy chairman will be supported in his new role by Rosemary Smith, managing director of RSA Direct and chairman of the DMA’s governance committee, who has been elected as the new deputy chairman.

Commenting on his new role Ping said: “Direct marketing is a large and diverse industry which touches the lives of most of the population and plays a key role within UK business. In 2005 the DMA faces a number of key challenges. First we need to ensure that consumers appreciate and recognise the benefits of direct marketing. Secondly we need to continue with our strategy to ensure that the industry meets the needs of the environmental agenda. And thirdly we need effective rules and sanctions across all areas of DM.”

He added: “We have to continue to demonstrate our ability to self-regulate and the DMA’s approach to governance is key to securing a strong future for the industry.”

Ping joined Guardian Newspapers in 1993 and has been responsible for the development of several new initiatives to boost customer focus across the company. Amongst other roles, he plays an important part in developing future revenue streams for the company and is a strong advocate of the intelligent use of data, digital channels and direct marketing techniques in wider marketing strategies. In addition to his new role Ping is also a director of the Advertising Standards Board of Finance.
