By the end of the decade, a third of all pay TV subscribers in Europe will be DTH customers, says a new report by Screen Digest.
In 1996, DTH had captured just 10% of the pay TV market, rising to 25% in 2003. Screen Digest predicts this figure will increase to 33% by 2008, equating to 28.5 million subscribers accessing pay TV via DTH.
DTH currently accounts for two thirds of the pay TV market in both the UK and Greece, and 94% of pay TV subscribers in Italy.
Last month, a new report from Informa Media Group predicted that 31.3 million European homes will have opted for DTH by 2010. Cable, however, is forecast to remain the most popular source of digital television, with 45.5 million homes subscribing by the end of the decade(see Full Digital TV Penetration Expected To Begin In 2014).
