EU Split Of Advertising Reform, Reports FT.com

A debate over whether to impose harmonised advertising laws across the European Union’s member states has emerged, according to a report on the FT.com website. The controversial plans to reform the EU’s advertising legislation will be unveiled in more detail in a green paper to be released next month.

However, the FT reports that whilst David Byrne, consumer protection minister, is in favour of harmonising the legislation across the EU, Frits Bolkestein, single market commissioner, would rather member states retained their own responsibility for advertising regulation.

It is thought that in the light of the conflicting views on the issue, the green paper will offer a number of alternatives for the reform.
