Families With Two Telephone Lines 70% More Likely To Have Broadband

Families with two telephone lines are 70% more likely to have broadband than those with only one, according to new research from Point Topic.

The analysis also shows that Sky+ subscribers have 62% broadband penetration, while those people relying on terrestrial TV have only 26%.

In addition, DSL is revealed as the most widely used data connection, although it still reaches less than 50% of workplaces and the study shows that it is used at more than 40% of sites except for the largest, where ISDN is most common.

Dial-up, although not much commented on these days, is still represented, as about 20% of sites in most size bands (27% of the smallest sites) still use it.

Meanwhile, Bulldog, one of the first broadband providers to offer the service for under £10, announced that it will no longer take on any new residential and small business customers from July 1, perhaps as a result of mounting pressure from Orange and Carphone Warehouse (under its TalkTalk brand), who recently announced their free broadband offers. Although the Bulldog will not be taking on new customers from these areas, it will continue as a retail brand for existing customers with ongoing customer care and launches of new services.

As of June 5 this year, 340,000 customers had signed up for the TalkTalk Free Broadband Forever service, with 100,000 customers going live on free broadband.

Meanwhile, Tiscali has launched its own VoIP service, Tiscali Netphone, over which users can access free PC to PC calls. The company follows Skype, Vonage and a host of others in offering free calls over the internet.
