February Text Messages Reach 2.19 Billion

February 2005 saw 2.19 billion text messages sent, with person to person texts across the UK GSM network operators showing an increase of 7.2% on the total sent during the same period in 2004, according to the latest figures released by the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

The month’s total was boosted by Valentine’s Day, which saw 92 million text messages sent, an increase of 18% on the same period in 2003, compared to 12 million cards delivered by the Post Office (see January 2005 Breaks Text Message Record).

This data confirms that the UK is on track to enjoy the strong growth in text messaging predicted by the MDA for 2005, estimating an annual total of 30 billion for the year (see Record Mobile Usage Set To Continue Next Year).

The MDA revealed at the beginning of January that 2004 has seen a record number of text messages sent, with mobile messaging hitting the 26 billion mark, breaking the previous yearly forecast of 25 billion (see 2004 Breaks Records For Text Messaging).
