Freeview To Launch Catch-Up Service

Freeview Logo Freeview is to launch a new catch-up service giving viewers the chance to watch popular programmes they might have missed and also plans to add subscription pay channels to its offering.

Ilse Howling, Freeview general manager, said that the catch-up service was about giving people more value and would make Freeview a “more sophisticated” platform.

She added that the Freeview, which has achieved massive growth in the UK, is aiming to bring consumers more sophisticated products.

More details are expected to be released at the start of next year, with Howling remaining tight-lipped as to whether viewers would be able to get the new services on their current Freeview boxes.

Freeview recently announced that it is in 14 million UK homes, reinforcing its position as the most popular Digital TV Service in the UK (see Freeview In 14 Million UK Homes).

It estimates that retail sales its PVR device, Freeview Playback, are at around 225,000.

The news followed hot on the heels of the start of digital switchover, which began in Whitehaven in Cumbria in October (see Digital Switchover Begins Today).

The two-stage process will be repeated across the UK until switchover is completed in 2012.
