Internet Pushes Radio Forward

Internet radio is increasing in popularity, with the online audience rising by 50% over the past year according to a new survey from Arbitron and Edison Media Research.

The Infinite Dial: Radio’s Digital Platforms report claims that unlike other traditional media, the internet may actually be reviving radio, with the US monthly online audience currently at 52 million, up from 37 million in 2005.

Satellite radio is also doing well, with awareness levels on the up and subscriptions being added faster than originally expected. According to the report, 18% of respondents of those who do not currently subscribe to satellite radio say they are likely to subscribe in the next 12 months.

Podcasting is also pushing radio listening forward, with 11% of Americans already having tried this new way to listen to radio programming.

eMarketer estimates that by the end of 2006, 3 million US consumers will listen to podcasting, rising to 15 million in 2010 (see Podcasting Could Reach 80 Million US Subscribers By 2010).

A study published at the beginning of the year by Bridge Ratings confirms podcasting’s increased presence, with data showing that around 5 million radio listeners downloaded at least one podcast in 2005, with the figure predicted to nearly double this year, and double again in 2007 (see Podcasting On The Rise).
