June Sets Record For Number Of Text Messages Sent

June saw a new record for text messages, with a total of 86.7 million messages sent on average per day throughout the month, topping 2.6 billion messages in total, according to new figures from the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

The MDA showed person to person texts sent across the UK GSM network operators last month to be up by 23.5% on the total sent during the same period in 2004.

In the first six months of 2005, over 15 billion person to person texts were sent, with the MDA forecasting an annual total of 30 billion.

The record breaking text messages continued from May, when a massive 2.63 billion texts were transmitted, representing an increase of 20% year on year (see Record Number Of Texts Sent In May).

May also saw the highest average daily figure recorded to date, with 85 million messages being sent per day.

Last month saw the MDA unveil WAP usage figures for April, with the medium continuing to grow in popularity. A total of 1.76 billion page impressions were viewed in the UK during April, representing an increase of 24% compared with the same period in 2004, and an average daily total of 58.9 million.
