Liverpool Lose Out To Return Of Silent Witness

Silent Witness Champions League Football on ITV1 last night was no match for BBC One’s double-header of Holby City and Silent Witness, with the Corporation’s dramas running out clear winners in the audience stakes.

The big match, featuring a business-like Liverpool side slotting four goals past Toulouse without reply, brought in a peak of 4.8 million adult viewers (a 22.9% audience share).

The game was perhaps most notable for the fact that Liverpool played the Z Cars theme before the match, a song closely associated with bitter rivals Everton, in honour of murdered 11-year-old Everton fan Rhys Jones.

Away from the football, Holby City, on BBC One at 8pm, had a peak audience of 5.5 million adults (a 25.7% share), and an average of 5.4 million adults stayed tuned throughout its hour-long running time.

Last night’s episode featured one of those moments we can all relate to, as Maddy’s heroin addict sister was brought in with an enormous abscess but refused to have it drained.

Following straight on from the fast-paced medical drama was the first part of the new series of Silent Witness, where a military helicopter crashed in mysterious circumstances.

The show, part two of which can be seen tonight, had a peak audience of 5.8 million adults (26.8% share).

Also on last night at 9pm was Tribe, the BBC Two series in which intrepid explorer Bruce Parry learns to integrate with indigenous people around the globe.

Last night he was in a very cold part of Russia, and the biting wind brought with it a peak audience of 2.2 million adults (a 10.6% share).
