More Attention Focused On Camera Phones

Sales of camera phones increased by 65% to 8.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2002, as a growing number of mobile users embraced the latest state of the art handsets.

CIT-Online reports that phones with in-built cameras made up 4% of worldwide sales in 2002 and 7% in Q4 alone. Until now, the Far East has dominated the picture (see Far East Driving Camera Phone Sales, Says Strategy Analytics) and this continues to be the case with Asia accounting for 80% of all camera phone sales.

It is estimated that sales of the devices will rise to about 37 million (9% of total handset sales) this year as more consumers are attracted by the prospect of being able to take pictures and play games on a phone.
