New MRG Committee Expects Focus On Multimedia Measurement

The Media Research Group has announced the results of its recent committee elections and indicated that online ratings measurement will be high on the agenda during 2004.

The elections have secured committee places for Gary Roddy from i.d.s, Denise Turner from the Media Planning Group, Rosemary Taylor from RTA, Keith Donaldson from BBC Worldwide, John Krzyzanowski from Channel 4, Jeff Eales from DDS, Alan Higgs from NOP Consumer and Ivor Millman from Granada Media/ITV. Individual roles have yet to be confirmed although these are expected within the next month.

Outlining the events likely to dominate the coming year and occupy the committee, returning chairwoman, Christina Hartley of IPC Media, said: “I think the challenge for everyone is going to be the multimedia side. A lot of people want BARB and RAJAR to talk to each other a bit more because they’re both broadcast, but I suppose the one change this year from the last 20 or 30 years is that people are actually doing things about multimedia now, as opposed to just talking about it.”

Hartley expressed relief that the topic was finally being tackled, stating: “I’ve been in the business for about 16 years and right from day one I was hearing conversations about the need for multimedia measurement, and I’m sure it was going on for another 20 years before I came in. I think it’s a good thing for the industry that it’s finally happening.”

Top of the list for those involved in multi-media measurement will be the ongoing dispute between Kelvin MacKenzie’s Wireless Group and radio ratings body, RAJAR. MacKenzie alleges that “flaws” in RAJAR’s research have led to a loss of earnings for his company and he is currently suing the audience research body, claiming damages of more than £66 million (see MacKenzie To Claim £66 Million In Damages From RAJAR).
