O2 To Offer Broadband Service Next Year

Mobile phone operator O2 has announced that it is to offer a broadband service starting from spring 2007.

According to reports in the trade press, O2 has begun talks with BT and Cable & Wireless about the offering but as yet no deal has been brokered.

The reports quote CEO Peter Erskine as denying that the company is making a grab for more customers but is rather adopting a more defensive approach to protect its existing market share.

As with the launch of BT’s mobile television service BT Movio, O2 is understood to be intent on launching its broadband service with little fanfare.
