People Appoints New Editor

Newsstand Lloyd Embley has been appointed as the new editor of the People six months after he took over as acting editor.

Embley took over as acting editor of the Sunday tabloid after Mark Thomas left the job last November.

Trinity Mirror, owner of the paper, also announced that its deputy editor, Ben Proctor, is leaving the company.

Daily Mirror assistant editor of news, Gary Jones, has been appointed deputy editor with immediate effect.

Sly Bailey, Trinity Mirror chief executive said: “As acting editor, Lloyd has demonstrated a real grasp of the People‘s readership and its market.

“He has a clear, modern vision for the title’s future along with the right skills to succeed. I’m delighted to appoint him as editor.”

Embley said: “I am absolutely delighted to be given the opportunity to lead this great newspaper at a very exciting time. We are facing the circulation challenge head on and, with the plans we have in place and the considerable talents of our staff, we will ensure the People continues to be a great Sunday newspaper.”

The latest national newspaper ABC figures, for May 2008, show that the People‘s circulation was down by 11.5% year on year, or 83,000 copies, leaving its total at under 647,000 (see ABC National Newspaper Round-Up: May 2008).
