Point of View – ‘The editor’s decision is final’

A MediaTel Newsline reader – name and company withheld – comments on Greg Grimmer’s ‘The editor’s decision is final’ article, which was published on Tuesday…

Greg’s comments suggest he may have missed a point or two:

Spotify allows the user to set his own playlist as one would using iTunes etc, or allows the editors to do what editors do – recommend, set agendas, plug and play.

One can download via affiliates, or subscribe to a no-ad variant on a daily or monthly basis.

And like its descendant Pandora, the user’s music DNA can be tracked for eventual contextual marketing (presumably). Sounds like a plan I’d want enacting If I wanted to reach consumers.

As the ‘traditional’ ad funded model is becoming harder to sustain online, maybe the subscription one will take hold. It’s on the agenda for sure.

Moreover, if you dig, you’ll discover some heavy duty stakeholders from the recording industry. Spotify could actually be the saviour of the medium Greg argues is jeopardised by it.
