RAJAR figures for Q1 2011 saw stand-out performances from a number of commercial radio stations, including talkSPORT, Capital and Absolute.
All Radio saw its reach hit the 47 million listener mark for the first time ever, while All Commercial Radio recorded its highest ever reach (over 34 million listeners).
Commercial radio also managed to gain some ground on the BBC’s share of listening after posting a small 1.3% YoY increase, while the BBC suffered a -1.5% decrease.
In the national market, there were positive results for the networks, while individual stations continued to gain listeners. Total Global Radio (UK) put in a good performance, as did Bauer’s Radio Total Portfolio – with Kiss UK doing particularly well.
BBC Radio 2 is a non-mover at the top of the breakfast show chart, although the real success stories were seen by talkSPORT and the Total Absolute Radio Network in the national listings. In London, Capital London’s Johnny Vaughan and Lisa Snowdon continue to reign the breakfast chart. Global’s Heart London will also be pleased with its performance, jumping in to second place after a positive 18.1% quarterly rise in reach.
It’s all change in London, with the newly renamed Capital London claiming the top spot and Heart moving in to second place after a 19.3% QoQ increase in reach. Total Absolute Radio (London) also made a real comeback, while Smooth Radio put in an impressive performance.
22.3 million people now tune in via a digital receiver each week, up from 19.7 million people in Q1 2010. A rise in reach and hours has also pushed Digital Radio‘s share of listening to 26.5% – accounting for more than one quarter of all radio listening.
Meanwhile, listening to digital radio via other platforms such as mobiles, digital televisions and the internet continues to grow in popularity.
