Secret Smile Falters As ITV Trades Blows With BBC

ITV Logo The second half of ITV’s psychological thriller, Secret Smile, drew an audience of 5.8 million last night, performing well, but failing to replicate the success of the first episode’s 6.9 million.

The programme compared favourably with BBC One’s offering of Crimewatch UK and regional news in the same time slot, however, building on ITV’s success earlier in the evening, with Emmerdale scoring audiences of 7.8 million against BBC One’s Watchdog with 4.6 million.

ITV failed to maintain its lead throughout the evening, however, with BBC One’s Eastenders drawing a respectable 8.9 million adult viewers on average, compared with ITV’s 3.1 million for Home For Christmas.

Channel 4’s You Are What You Eat drew an audience of 2.6 million meanwhile, followed by Space Cadets, which performed in line with previous outings, notching up an average audience of 1.8 million as the show’s contestants settled into life in “orbit” around the Earth.

Five’s CSI:Miami drew 2.6 million on average to provide the broadcaster’s high point of the evening, followed by CSI:NY with 2.2 million on average.
