SUBtv Expansion Corners 75% Of Student Audiences

Staff – MediaTel NewsLine National student union TV network, SUBtv, has secured a further 20 university campuses to expand its network into a total of 85 institutions and reach 1.5 million students every week, representing 75% of the overall student population.

The massive expansion, made as part of the broadcaster’s strategic growth programme, sees the network established as a premier medium through which advertisers can target the notoriously tricky student demographic. And with exclusive ten-year contracts in place, the network’s future looks increasingly secure.

Broadcasting music video content and bespoke programming through several plasma screens at each location, the company targets viewers mostly in student union bars. However, with a total of 115 installations on 85 campuses SUBtv is uniquely placed to integrate brand messages into the heart of student life, with screens centrally located in universities’ social and commercial hubs of day-to day activity.

SUBtv’s advanced network offers flexibility to advertisers, with regionalised programming and promotional messages easily integrated with national content. The network’s screens are programmed to provide either SUBtv’s own programming or third party television broadcasts. In addition the broadcast includes local information of direct relevance to each specific site.

The broadcaster’s new AIRtime system also allows screens to be split into different zones, with different messages displayed in different areas to sit alongside national broadcasts.

Explaining the benefits of the SUBtv network, Peter Miles, chief executive of the company said: “Our dominance of this medium means that we are now the main gateway for any company aiming to reach students. Our investment in editorial programming, events and all types of facilities for students has built a substantial brand loyalty to the channel.”

He added: “Now we are established at the core of student life we have a superb platform for extending the SUBtv brand, which is one of our strategic objectives. We are now in a position to provide a cross-campus vision on an integrated communication platform.”

Amongst the unique programming abilities of SUBtv’s network is live, cross campus coverage of sporting events and real-time head to head competition between universities.

A recent promotion by computer games giant Ubisoft saw students in rival universities compete in an internet games tournament, televised via SUBtv’s network and followed by students in union bars nation-wide (see SUBtv Promotes Ubisoft Game With Internet Tournament).

In addition, the channel offers advertisers with fully interactive advertising and SMS opportunities at a fraction of the cost of terrestrial or satellite television. The system is also fully accountable, with point of sale data able to report the direct purchasing effects of an on-campus campaign.
