TV Market Round-up: December 2009

A television

December saw ITV1’s revenue increase by an impressive 14.9% year on year, with Channel 4 up by around 3.5%.

ITV1’s revenue hit almost £101.7 million in December following the year on year increase. Channel 4 was also up on December 2008, by 3.4% to almost £47.4 million.

The picture was less rosy at Five, however, with a 6.8% year on year fall in revenues to £19.3 million.

GMTV, meanwhile, dipped 1.5% year on year, to £4 million.

ITV Franchises

Six ITV franchise regions provided revenue share of 10% or more, with the largest share coming from Central at 15.81%, although this was down 0.43 percentage points year on year.

Carlton’s figure was up 0.49 percentage points year on year, to 14.18% in December.

There were also increases for Yorkshire/North East (+0.34%), HTV (+0.38%), North West/Border (+0.42%), and Scotland (+0.24%).

Anglia TV and Meridian posted year on year increases of 0.04% and 0.09% respectively.

Costs Per Thousand

In December, ITV1’s CPT price was up across the board. The biggest rise was for the Men audience, up 14% year on year.

Channel 4’s price was up for all audiences apart from Housewives with Children, down slightly, by 0.4%, while Five was down across all audiences bar one; Men remained static year on year.

Commercial Impacts

Commercial impacts at ITV1`were up across all our featured audiences in December. The largest increase was in the ABC1 Adults category, up 4.1% year on year.

Channel 4’s commercial impacts were up across two of our featured audiences, with the biggest rise in the Housewives and Children category, up 3.8% year on year.

Five was down across all of our featured audiences, with Men seeing the largest decline, down 7.8% year on year.

Total Broadcast commercial impacts were up across all categories. The largest increase was for the Housewives with Children audience, up 4.5% year on year.
