UBM Appoints Ex-Emap Director As New CMPi Chief Executive

United Business Media (UBM) has announced the appointment of Gary Hughes as the new chief executive of CMP Information (CMPi), the company’s specialist consumer publishing division.

Hughes will take up the new role later this month, bringing extensive media experience, most recently from his five year role as group finance director at Emap, a position which also saw him assume the position of chairman at Emap’s music division.

Prior to his work with Emap, Hughes worked with Scottish Media Group as financial director, with responsibility for strategic business development, steering the company through several acquisitions.

The new CMPi chief executive has also held international management positions with Forte and Guinness, and remains a non-executive director of J.Sainsbury.

Commenting on the appointment, David Levin, chief executive of UBM, said: “I am delighted to appoint Gary to this important post. Gary’s impressive track record of strategic business development, coupled with his experience and knowledge of CMP Information’s markets, makes him the ideal candidate to lead CMPi into its next phase of growth. I look forward to Gary also contributing his experience and expertise to the work of UBM’s senior management team.”

The appointment follows that of Steve Weitzner as chief executive of CMP Media, UBM’s electronics and online media arm last year (see UBM Appoints Weitzner As Chief Executive Of CMP Media).

UBM recently announced the purchase of US events business Shorecliff Communications for $12.3 million, and the events assets of MediaLive International for $65 million (see UBM Extends Reach In Events Arena).
