US Broadband Net Population Swells To 24m

Twelve percent of the US population now have broadband at home, according to a new report from Pew Internet & American Life Project. The total number of people using high speed web services now stands at 24 million, up from just 6 million in June 2000.

Twenty-one percent of US internet users now access the internet via broadband and the survey revealed that their surfing habits differ from those of dial-up users.

Pew found that 82% of broadband users go online on a typical day, as opposed to just 58% of dial-up users. They are also much much more likely to create online content and share files with other net users. In addition, as many as 55% of broadband users have networked all the computers in their house for high speed.

A recent study by the Leichtman Research Group estimated that there will be 37 million broadband internet subscribers in the US by 2007 (see US Broadband Net Population To Hit 37bn By 2007).
